0:02 This video shows some simple examples of what is known as profile shifting.
0:08 This is a method of changing the nature of your available controls to access things
0:13 that you couldn’t otherwise. Those available controls may be as basic as a
0:17 single button to a conventional joypad to all manner of hybrid mishmash systems.
0:24 The profile shifting examples shown tend to focus on changing the function of the
0:29 left stick, imagining that the user perhaps cannot access the right stick at
0:34 all. There are a range of methods to achieve these kinds of things. This can
0:41 be directly through an adapter such as a Titan 1 or Titan 2 straight into a
0:45 console. It can also be achieved through software such as “UCR” known as
0:50 “Universal Control Re-mapper” which would link PC controls across to a games
0:55 console. This game is Pure Pool and it’s showing the ability to swap the left stick
Swapping the Stick
1:04 to act as the left or right stick using the shift button of L1. This is showing
1:11 that you can use a single stick and a button to get extra functions on most
1:18 game controllers. At the moment this is showing the stick acting conventionally
1:23 as the left stick for aiming and if I hold this button (L1) and press right I
1:31 can change to the right stick mode and take a shot.
1:42 So here I am in left stick mode aiming and then moving across the right stick
1:49 mode and taking a shot with minimal movement.
Flower
2:07 This game is called flower and conventionally this is a sixaxis game. We have to physically move the
2:11 controller around to play. This uses a special mode which allows you to put the
2:17 sixaxis motion onto a single stick enough to play this game. You pollinate
2:22 everything. You’re the wind and the idea of the game is to bring back nature.
2:30 It’s a lovely game.
Everybodys Gone to the Rapture
2:37 This is a walking simulator called “Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture” but this
2:43 method can also apply to first-person shooters and this shows a method of
2:48 merging left and right stick together onto a single stick where by using the
2:55 left stick you can move but whilst holding it in a position such as up if
3:00 you tap L1 (your shift control) you can lock that motion on and quickly switch
3:05 the stick over to the right stick which enables you to look and move at
3:11 the same time. At the minute I’m in left stick mode but if I walk and then tap a
3:21 special button, in this case L1 (it doesn’t have to be), I moved to right
3:25 stick mode and I can walk and look at the same time to explore freely. These
3:34 are the sort of spirits that are in separate parts of the area and there’s
3:40 associated story with them. If you want to stop you just tap L1.
3:52 I can walk backwards and then if I tap the special button, L1 in this case,
4:02 I’m holding whatever that direction was and it will constantly walk until I tap L1
4:10 again. Again I’m in left stick mode. I’m looking forward, tap L1 and I’ll
4:19 quickly dart into the right stick mode.
4:30 In this game if you hold trigger you get a sprinting action.
4:49 This game shows a method of using just the left side of the controller to access the basic
4:53 controls of the driving game. You have left and right steering conventionally,
4:58 if you pull down you’ll reverse and in this case pressing the left trigger will
5:03 accelerate. It’s also possible to use the left stick alone for accelerate, reverse
5:08 left/right steering, but in this instance accelerations on the left trigger and
5:15 braking and reversing is on the down action of the left stick. All of these
5:28 options can be reached through one side of the controller if needed and using
5:35 other software connected to a PC it’s possible to access all these using
5:39 speech or other methods.
Universal Control Ring
5:44 This is another method of getting more controls on a
5:49 reduced number of buttons and joysticks. This is using some software called UCR
5:55 Universal Control Re-mapper. At the minute I’m in left stick mode mode. If I
6:04 use the shift button L1 and press right, now I’ve got control of the right
6:11 stick. This ability to change controls on the
6:16 fly is very helpful and with UCR all manner of controls can be combined to be
6:23 seen as a single controller that could include speech, keyboard controls,
6:28 switches, a mix of joysticks. All sorts is possible. If this seems complicated
6:38 please do get in touch and we can help more.
In this video Barrie shows some examples of profile shifting. This is changing the nature of your available controls to access things that you couldn’t otherwise. For example, shifting the left stick functions over to the right stick by holding down a trigger button.
Those available controls may be as basic as a single button to a conventional joypad to all manner of hybrid mishmash systems.
