0:02 Hi, in this video we’re going to look at how to play World of Warcraft
0:06 using voice control and mouse.
0:09 We will also include a brief demonstration on how to play using this method,
0:14 as well as some additional options you may wish to add.
0:27 In order to play World of Warcraft using voice control you will need a voice control software.
0:31 In this case we will be using Gavpi.
0:35 Gavpi is a free to download voice control software that allows mouse and keyboard functions
0:40 to be controlled by your voice.
0:43 These functions can be adjusted later to suit your preferences.
0:47 You can download and setup Gavpi manually, however, for beginners we
0:51 recommend downloading the “World of Warcraft Voice Pack” from the SpecialEffect blog.
0:56 You will need either “7-Zip” or “WinRAR” to extract the files from the folder.
1:00 This can be downloaded for free online, however, for this video we’ll be using “7-Zip”.
1:06 Once downloaded right-click the file called “World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack”,
1:11 click “7-Zip” or “WinRAR”
1:13 and “Extract Files”.
1:20 Extracting the files to the desktop would be ideal for ease of access.
1:24 You can now delete the zipped file to avoid confusion later.
1:31 Now we need to open the new “World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack”
1:35 and select “World of Warcraft Voice Control”.
1:38 Inside you’ll see three files,
1:41 the one you want to select is “Gavpi”,
1:45 and finally “Gavpi.exe”. If this message pops up press “Yes”.
1:54 You should see a white box labeled “Gavpi” up here. Now we need to click “Settings” and just press “Save”.
2:05 In the top left of Gavpi press “File”, “Open Profile”.
2:12 This should take you to this screen where you see “WoW.xml”. Select that file and press “Open”.
2:21 If this has work correctly you should see “NOT LISTENING WoW”.
2:27 This indicates the Gavpi is currently running the WoW profile, however it is not currently listening
2:32 for any voice commands. To double-check that this is worked or to adjust any
2:36 commands in future select “Profile” and “Modify”. Do not select “New” as this will
2:44 delete the current profile.
2:47 If you accidentally press “New” you can reload the WoW presets by following the previous steps.
2:53 From this screen it is possible to modify current functions or create brand new ones of your own, as we
3:00 will come back to this later in the video.
3:02 Gavpi is broken down into three parts
3:06 the “Triggers” the voice command given to activate a button such as “Walk”, “Jump”, “Left” and “Right”.
3:15 “Action Sequences” this is what actually happens for example holding down the “W”
3:21 Key for three seconds or pressing the “Spacebar” and finally “Trigger Events”, this
3:27 is what tells Gavpi which word triggers what action.
3:37 By default this Gavpi profile will have these functions programmed into it.
3:44 These instructions are included in the “World of Warcraft Voice Control Folder” labeled “World of
3:49 Warcraft Voice Control Guide”. At this point you may wish to test if Gavpi
3:54 is working. If you have modified the default profile remember to save it as
3:59 something different, otherwise simply close the modify window.
4:11 In order to test that Gavpi is working press “Listen”
4:17 and say some practice commands.
4:21 “Forwards”
4:24 “Left”
4:26 “Right”
4:28 “Stop”
4:31 “Jump” “Jump” “Jump”
4:37 If you wish to change any of the trigger words in Gavpi you can do so using
4:41 the same modification method as before. “Profile”, “Modify” and then under “Triggers”
4:49 find the word you wish to change, “Select”, “Right Click” and “Edit”.
4:56 In the “Speech Recognition Word or Phrase” this is where you would type in the new word that you wish to say.
5:06 Select “OK” and to save press “File”, “Save as”.
5:18 In order to play World of Warcraft you will need a “battle.net” account.
5:22 The game can be played for free up to level 20.
5:27 Don’t forget to check your email to verify your new account.
5:32 After you’ve created your account you can download the game for free at “worldofwarcraft.com”.
5:43 Once you’ve downloaded the game log in and create your character.
5:48 It is important to make a note of which realm or server the character is being made on in this case “Blades Edge”.
5:56 Go to “Create New Character” and have fun making your character.
6:04 Once you’re happy with your character it’s time to enter the world.
6:12 Once in the world set Gavpi to “Listen” and you’ll be able to run around and
6:16 enjoy a few of the basic commands.
6:24 “Forwards”
6:27 “Jump”
6:29 “Left”
6:31 “Right”
6:33 “Stop”
6:38 At this point you’ll be able to play the game with voice controls, however, as you level up
6:42 in the game and gain new spells and abilities you may wish to have more
6:46 action bars at the bottom in order to use them. We will show you how to set
6:49 this up with voice control now. You first need to close the game,
6:54 press “Escape”, “Exit Game”, “Exit Now”.
7:01 Once you have closed the game find the shortcut “Right Click” press
7:06 “Open File Location”. This will take you to where the majority of your World of
7:10 Warcraft folders have been saved. Click the folder called “Retail”, “WTF”, “Account” and then the
7:23 account number. This is where the server that we remembered before becomes important
7:29 so click “Blades Edge” and our character.
7:36 In here we need to delete all the files apart from “Saved Variables”.
7:46 Once you’ve deleted all the files in the folder open up the “World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack”
7:55 and go to “Copy WTF”, in here you’ll find a “Bindings-Cache” file simply drag and drop
8:05 into the other folder. You can now close both folders. This will swap the keybinds
8:13 of the character from the original 10 up to 30 this will also match the key
8:18 binds to the Gavpi voice command. Upon loading back into the game you will see
8:24 that nothing appears to have changed, however, if we go into the settings
8:28 you’ll see that it has. If you press “Escape” and scroll down to “Interface”
8:35 scroll down to “Action Bars” and tick each of these boxes “Bottom Left Bar”, “Bottom
8:42 Right Bar”, “Right Bar” and “Right Bar 2”. Then press “Okay”.
8:50 You will now see that you have an extra bar at the bottom here, however, if you go
8:56 to the bottom right of the screen to where the Spellbook is or if you have
9:00 Gavpi listening and say the command word “Spellbook” it will bring up where
9:06 your spells and abilities are. You will now be able to see that you actually
9:10 have significantly more buttons for you to place your spells on, ranging from
9:16 “1 to 12”, “Shift 1 to 12”, “Control 1 to 12” and “Alt 1 to 12” this will give you 30 binds
9:25 in total which is more than enough to play the game on any class.
9:30 If you find that the “Alt” key binds are not working toggle “Num Lock On” on your keyboard
9:40 Now we will go over some optional recommended settings for World of Warcraft.
9:46 To open your settings press “Escape”, “Interface” from here we can change
9:53 many of the aspects of the game. The first setting that I recommend changing
9:57 is to toggle on “Sticky Targeting”. This sets the game so that you cannot
10:03 accidentally click off of your target. Next I recommend turning on “Auto Loot”.
10:10 This will automatically pick up any of the items that you need while
10:13 questing through the world. Next go to “Names”,
10:21 then toggle “Always Show Nameplates”. This will bring up health bars above all of
10:27 the allies and enemies in the world and then select “Larger Nameplates”. This will
10:33 increase the size of the nameplates making them far easier to see and target.
10:39 Next if you go to “Camera”, “Camera Following Style” and select “Always Adjust Camera”
10:52 This sets the camera so that it always automatically follows your character.
10:56 Select “Mouse” then select “Click to Move”. With the command word “Attack”
11:04 you’ll be able to move your character to the location where you’ve placed your
11:08 cursor. This can allow for significantly easier movement in small or tight spaces.
11:14 Finally if you’re playing in windowed mode I would recommend choosing “Lock
11:19 Cursor to Window”, this will stop your game cursor from leaving the screen.
11:25 In order to play in windowed mode press “Escape”, go to “System” and then under the
11:33 “Graphics” tab in display mode select the option “Windowed” or “Full Screen Windowed”.
11:44 “Forwards” “Left” “Left”
11:52 “Left”
11:56 “Click”
12:00 “Attack”
12:07 “Map”
12:10 “Click”
12:18 As well as the settings in the game it is possible to download additional files
12:22 called add-ons that may prove helpful in the game.
12:26 You can do this from “twitch.com/downloads”
12:30 I highly recommend using this app to manage your add-ons. If you
12:34 scroll down to “Desktop Apps” and select whichever one is appropriate for your
12:41 operating system, for us we’ll be using Windows, and “Download”.
12:48 Once you have the “Twitch App” downloaded we could install the add-ons. In the top task bar of the
12:55 “Twitch App” select the mods, then select “World of Warcraft”.
13:01 It will currently show you have no add-ons installed. In order to get some
13:06 we will click “Get More Addons”, from here it will give you a list of popular and
13:13 new releases along with recommended add-ons. In order to search by name go to
13:18 the far right of the screen and in the search bar type the name of the add-on
13:22 that you wish to search, it will come up with a list of all the add-ons matching
13:26 your criteria. Once you have selected the add-on that you wish to install simply
13:31 press “Install” and it will do the rest of the work for you.
13:34 The first add-on I would recommend is called “Dialog Key”. Using this add-on you
13:41 can accept text and quests in the game by pressing “Spacebar”, it will also allow
13:45 you to interact with text in the game by pressing “1”, “2”, “3”, “4”, “5”.
13:52 This is very convenient for people who find clicking on small icons difficult.
14:02 The next add-on I would recommend is “GTFO”. What this add-on does is if you are
14:08 ever standing in something bad in the game
14:10 or something that is dealing you damage it will give you an audio alert that you
14:14 can customize to signal for you to move.
14:18 “Deadly Boss Mods” is a comprehensive add-on that has audio features as well
14:23 as visual cues to alert you when something is happening in the game.
14:27 Oftentimes this will become very useful when fighting larger bosses who have
14:31 predetermined scripts on when they will attack you and when they will use
14:35 special abilities. This add-on will tell you exactly when this is going to happen
14:39 so that you can prepare for them beforehand. “Mik Scrolling Combat Text” is
14:45 an add-on similar to “GTFO” but it allows you to customise your own audio cues for
14:51 any part of the game, for example you can have an audio cue when your health bar
14:55 gets too low, when your manner is too low, or if an enemy or ally is out of range
15:01 of your spell. “AutoTurnin” is a simple add-on that will automatically accept
15:06 the quest rewards for you, unless you need to pick or select a certain item.
15:11 This can be helpful if pressing the small accept button is proving difficult.
15:20 “Forwards”
15:23 “Attack”
15:26 “Stop”
15:28 “Right”
15:30 “Select”
15:33 “Click”
15:36 “Click”
15:38 “Attack”
15:40 “Click”
15:42 “Forwards”
15:52 “Attack”
15:54 “Forwards”
15:56 “Click”
15:58 “Map”
16:08 “Spellbook”
16:11 “Click”
16:13 “Left”
16:14 “Stop”
16:16 “Forwards”

16:37 Thanks for watching if you have any questions please contact SpecialEffect.
In this article we explain how you can play World of Warcraft [PEGI 12] with voice control and a handful of mouse options. This will be a step by step guide on how to download, install and use the programs necessary to begin your adventure in Azeroth!
Before we begin, you will need the following prerequisites:
- A computer capable of running the game details here.
- A file extraction software, such as Winrar or 7Zip
- A microphone/headset set up to capture your voice, for advice on how to do this watch our voice control guide here. 0:30s – 0:40s
- Whichever mouse control option you prefer, E.G. eye tracker, joystick, mouse or head-mouse.
- A Battle.Net account and the game installed
- A strong internet connection (to run the game)
Step 1: Download and Setup Voice Control!
This can be found on the SpecialEffect Blog by searching or clink the link “here“.
Once the folder has downloaded, right click it and select Extract Files. Be sure to save the files somewhere memorable as we will need them later!
We will be using the free to download GavPi software to control our character in the game. You can find this folder inside the Voice Control Pack via: World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack > GavPi > GavPi (Application) ![]()
Open the application and this window should appear…

At this point, select settings and press save.
Next we need to load up the pre-programmed voice profile! This contains a list of general commands needed to control most aspects of the game such as walking, attacking and selecting. In order to do this we must select file > open profile > WoW.xml
If for some reason WoW.xml does not appear you can find it manually through: World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack > World of Warcraft Voice Control > GavPi > Profiles > WoW.xml.
If all is well we should now be able to check that our setup is working. The bottom left of the GavPi window should now read NOT LISTENING: WoW, which means that the program is running the WoW profile, however, it is currently not actively listening for any commands. In order to do that we need to plug in our microphone and press listen.
Try saying some of these phrases and see if GavPi picks them up:
- Forwards
- Left
- Right
- Jump
- Click
- Spellbook
- one, two, three, four, five
If all is working as intended your GavPi window should look like this:

If you are not seeing this occur some common issues can be:
- Microphone not setup properly
- Voice too quiet or too loud (this can be adjusted in your microphone settings)
- Unclear speech.
GavPi works best when words are spoken clearly and calmly, however, it should still work even if you have a fairly strong accent. If for any reason the commands are not good for you, you can modify the command word needed to trigger any given action.
This is done by making sure GavPi is not listening by pressing stop. Then, select profile > modify.

From this window you can edit any trigger or action sequence via right click > edit. A full guide on how to edit or create your own profiles can be found here.
A full list of pre-programmed controls as well as step my step instructions can be found in World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack > World of Warcraft Voice Control > World of Warcraft Voice Control Guide.doc
Step 2: Setting up World of Warcraft
At this point the game will be playable with most of its features available to you. However, it is highly recommended that you take this extra step as it will allow you access to 30 different ability buttons as opposed to the standard 10.
Once you have made your Battle.Net account and downloaded the game. Log in and create your first character, you should be able to do this using the click command in GavPi by pressing listen and leaving the software to run in the background, and using the Windows on screen keyboard. It is recommended you allow the Battle.net App and game to remember you for ease of access in the future.
It is important to make a note of which realm you have made your character on.
Once you have made your character, enter the world and have fun using your voice to control your character! In order to achieve the 30 buttons we are after we will have to change some settings in the game. We want to enable multiple action bars, to do this press Esc > Interface > Action bars > enable bottom left, bottom right, right 1, right 2

Additional settings you may wish to change at this point would be:
- Windowed You will need the game in windowed in order to use the built-in windows on screen keyboard for chat functions).
- Click to move
- Auto loot
- Sticky Targeting (Sets the game so that you cannot accidentally click off your target)
- Lock cursor to window (If playing in windowed mode). This will prevent the mouse from accidentally leaving the game window
- Always adjust camera (Sets the camera to always automatically follow your character)
- Larger Nameplates (increases the size of the health bars of players and enemies making them easier to see and click)
Full instructions on how to adjust these can be found in the World of Warcraft Voice Control Guide Pg 3 – 4.
The final stage of setup is to tell World of Warcraft which buttons we would like our 30 buttons to be. By default the World of Warcraft Voice Control Pack will make them 1-10, shift 1-10, control 1-10, and alt 1-10, (however it is important to note that due to limitations in the software alt 1-10 are technically speaking num-pad 1-10. It was felt alt 1-10 was easier to say).
To do this we first need to log out of our lovely new adventurer and exit the game. Esc > exit game. Once out of the game right click on your World of Warcraft desktop icon or application icon and select open file location. This will bring you to where all the files for World of Warcraft are currently stored on your PC.
Select the retail folder > WTF > Account > whichever account you wish to modify (if there is only one select that one) > the realm your character was made on > The name of your new character. If done correctly you should end up on a screen that looks somewhat like this:

Delete the Bindings Cache wtf file.
This essentially wipes the default settings from WoW to be replaced with the ones we want. Now we must open the World of Warcraft Voice Pack once more and select the copy WTF folder. Inside you will find the replacement Bindings Cache wtf file, simply drag and drop or copy and paste this file into same folder that we were in previously. This will now tell the game to use 1-10, shift 1-10, control 1-10, and alt 1-10 as commands for those multiple actions bars we set up earlier!
Step 3: Adventure forth and save the world!
That’s it! Upon logging in once more you should now see your shiny new action bars filled with their corresponding keybind! In order to check this is working you can open your spell book, drag and drop a spell onto one of the new bars and, with GavPi listening, say the keybind name!
You may find it easier to change the keybind trigger words to the actual spell names, this does work. However, we used the keybind names as it allows you to use the same setup across multiple characters.
Step 4: Optional Extras
In World of Warcraft there are special downloadable modifications that can help you in game. They are not needed and are purely down to personal preference, however a list of some which may be useful can be found in the Voice Control Guide. It is strongly recommended to use the Twitch App to download, install and update these as it makes life very simple. You can find it here.
Thank you and happy adventuring heroes!
